India’s wheat output pegged at record 120 mln tons in MY 2025/26 – Ministry

India’s wheat production in the 2025/26 marketing year is expected to reach a record 120.21 million tonnes, up 2% from 117.94 million tonnes harvested a year earlier, according to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture. Wheat, one of the key rabi crops, has already begun to be harvested, with the pace expected to accelerate in major producing states in the coming weeks.

Overall rabi crop production in India is projected to increase by 3.16% to 174.51 million tonnes in 2025/26, compared with 169.16 million tonnes a year earlier, according to the ministry’s second advance estimate.

Production of pulses during the rabi season is forecast at 16.24 million tonnes, about 7% higher than the 15.23 million tonnes recorded last year. Chickpea (gram) output is estimated at 11.79 million tonnes, up from 11.11 million tonnes, while lentil production is expected to rise to 1.73 million tonnes from 1.65 million tonnes. However, output of urad is projected to decline to 508,000 tonnes from 553,000 tonnes, and green gram to 87,000 tonnes from 100,000 tonnes.

Among oilseeds, rapeseed-mustard production is estimated at 13.33 million tonnes, compared with 12.66 million tonnes a year earlier. Groundnut output is expected to increase to 797,000 tonnes from 678,000 tonnes, while sunflower seed production may decline to 104,000 tonnes from 121,000 tonnes.

Corn production during the rabi season is forecast to rise to 15.90 million tonnes from 14.75 million tonnes, while rice output is expected to reach 16.72 million tonnes, up from 16.12 million tonnes last year. Total coarse cereals production is projected at 21.34 million tonnes, compared with 19.86 million tonnes a year earlier. The ministry noted that the estimates are based on average yields and may be revised in subsequent reports.
