India’s soyoil imports to rise to a record 5.7 mln tons
India’s soyoil imports in MY 2025/26 could rise by 4.2% to a record 5.7 mln tons. Higher prices for competing palm and sunflower oils have made soyoil more attractive to price-sensitive Indian buyers.
Palm oil imports are also expected to recover from a five-year low, rising 5.5% to 8 mln tons. Meanwhile, sunflower oil imports could decline by 3% to 2.85 mln tons.
India meets nearly two-thirds of its domestic vegetable oil demand through imports. The main suppliers remain Malaysia, Indonesia, Argentina, Russia and Ukraine.
Soyoil is also benefiting from developments in the palm oil market. Rising palm oil use for biodiesel production in Indonesia is reducing export availability and supporting prices.
India’s total edible oil imports in MY 2025/26 could increase by 3.6% to a record 16.55 mln tons. Palm oil’s share of total imports is expected to remain below 50% for the second consecutive season.
