The Indian government has approved a six-year initiative, Pulses Mission 2031, aimed at making the country fully self-sufficient in pulse production and improving the nutritional health of its population. The program focuses on increasing yields, expanding cultivation areas, and supporting farmers through innovative agricultural technologies.

Despite being the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulses, India has seen its imports double in recent years. Domestic production has struggled to keep pace with rising demand, driven by higher incomes and improved living standards. This gap has increased reliance on imported pulses and created additional pressure on domestic markets.

Pulses Mission 2031 aims to address these challenges through investments in seed development, irrigation systems, and improved logistics. The government also plans to advance research on drought-resistant varieties, which is particularly important given climate-related risks.

Commodity market expert G. Chandrashekhar noted in an interview that the mission’s success will depend on consistent political support, funding, and public-private collaboration. If implemented effectively, he said, India could fully meet its pulse requirements by 2031.
