Imports and domestic production of hazelnuts in Ukraine have equalized
Today, the domestic hazelnut market in Ukraine consists of 1 thousand tons (4 thousand tons of shell) of imported products and 1 thousand tons of domestic production.
This is what Gennady Yudin, president of the Ukrainian Walnut Association, says in his article for the magazine “Gardening in Ukrainian”.
“Therefore, one of the main tasks of the industry is to meet the needs of the domestic market,” he writes. “In order to form the capabilities of our industry to meet domestic demand and the ability to cooperate and form export batches, we need to create a register of hazelnut orchards, which you can join at will. The main size of orchards in Ukraine is 10-50 hectares, and you don’t need to go the way of gigantomania. We have only five large orchards.”
The total area of nut orchards in Ukraine is 14.2 thousand hectares, of which 7.92 thousand hectares are hazelnuts, 6.14 thousand ha – walnut, 0.15 thousand ha – almond. Since last year, industrial rosehip orchards have also joined the structure of the association. In 2020, the number of walnut and hazelnut plantations equalized, and since 2021, the latter began to overtake the former in area.
