Heavy rains damage crops in Ukraine, but drought remains the main threat
During the first ten days of July, Ukraine experienced unstable weather with sharp temperature swings. At the beginning of the period, average daily temperatures exceeded the climatic norm by 4–6°C, while several weather stations in western Ukraine and Sumy region recorded or matched historical temperature records for the respective dates, according to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center.
The arrival of several cold fronts later brought a sharp drop in temperatures, accompanied by heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds. The most intense rainfall occurred in Kharkiv region on July 4 and in Dnipropetrovsk region on July 8–10, where severe weather caused localized damage to crops.
Rainfall distribution remained highly uneven across the country. Most western regions continued to experience a rainfall deficit, while parts of central, southern and eastern Ukraine received rainfall amounts close to or even exceeding the normal total for the entire ten-day period in a single event.
According to agrometeorologists, the end of the prolonged heatwave generally improved conditions for crop development across most of the country. However, the benefits depended largely on soil moisture, as localized rainfall was insufficient to significantly replenish productive moisture reserves.
Despite the rainfall, large areas planted with late-season crops continue to suffer from severe soil drought. The most critical conditions remain in parts of Kharkiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, where the one-meter soil layer has completely dried out, posing serious risks to crop development.
