Guterres on the resumption of the grain deal: I will not stop trying to achieve this
The world desperately needs Ukrainian food, as well as “Russian products and fertilizers,” so the UN will do everything possible to restore the grain deal. This was stated by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during his speech at the UN General Assembly.
“Even when there is fighting, we must look for all ways to alleviate the suffering of civilians in Ukraine and beyond. The Black Sea Grain Initiative was one of those ways. The world desperately needs Ukrainian food, as well as Russian products and fertilizers, to stabilize markets and guarantee food security. I will not stop trying to achieve this,” Guterres emphasized.
He noted that Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine “has set off a terrifying chain of events”. “Lives have been destroyed, human rights violated, families separated, children traumatized, dreams and hopes shattered,” he said.
Guterres added that Russia’s aggression has serious consequences for all of humanity. “Nuclear threats endanger us all. Ignoring global agreements and conventions makes us all less secure. And the poisoning of global diplomacy everywhere impedes progress. We must not stop promoting peace – a just peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law,” he concluded.
