‘Grain from Ukraine’ summit raises $150M to help African countries
Ukraine’s food initiative, aimed at overcoming the grain crisis in African countries, raised $150 million from more than 20 participating countries and the EU.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said this during the international summit on food security “Grain from Ukraine” in Kyiv on November 26.
“Grain from Ukraine is one of the biggest contributions to global stability. Currently, more than 20 countries and the European Union are financially participating in this initiative, and more than 10 countries are preparing to join. As of today, at the inaugural summit, we have already raised about $150 million,” he said and called on other states and socially responsible businesses to join the humanitarian initiative.
“Under the Grain from Ukraine initiative, by the end of next spring, we plan to send at least 60 ships from our ports – at least ten per month – to countries at risk of famine and drought. This is Ethiopia, these are Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Congo, Kenya, Nigeria,” he said.
Zelensky noted that under the initiative, one ship with grain provides food for about 90,000 people.
“The future of humanity depends on the readiness to respond effectively to the challenges of today,” he stressed.
