Global meat prices fall in September on cheaper pork and poultry
Global meat prices declined in September as pork and poultry became cheaper. The FAO Meat Price Index averaged 127.9 points, down 1.1% from the revised August level and unchanged from a year earlier.
Poultry meat prices fell due to ample export supplies from Brazil and weaker import demand from the EU. The market was also affected by new EU import requirements related to the use of antimicrobial drugs, which came into force on September 3.
Pork prices also declined because of abundant supplies in major exporting countries. In the EU, herd rebuilding returned to more normal levels after a summer slowdown caused by heatwaves, increasing meat availability and putting pressure on prices.
Beef price trends were mixed. Export prices in Australia declined amid stronger global competition, while Brazilian prices increased on stronger US demand following a temporary expansion of the tariff-rate quota for imports of lean beef.
Lamb prices were broadly stable. Firm global import demand supported export prices in Oceania, offsetting weaker prices in New Zealand, where currency movements also influenced the market.
