Global lentil production to decline in 2026/27
According to the June report by the International Grains Council, global lentil production is forecast to decline to 9.4 million tonnes in the MY 2026/27 from 10.6 million tonnes in 2025/26. Analysts attribute the decrease to reduced planted area and lower yields following the strong production growth recorded last season.
Despite the smaller harvest, global lentil consumption is expected to continue increasing, supported by ample carryover stocks. IGC projects consumption at 8.7 million tonnes in 2026/27, up from 8.5 million tonnes in the previous season and 7.3 million tonnes in 2024/25.
Meanwhile, global lentil trade is forecast to rise to 5 million tonnes in the 2026 calendar year, up 9% from 2025. Trade volumes are expected to remain at the same level in 2027, with demand from Asia continuing to be the main driver of the market.
