Global food trade remains resilient to global shocks — FAO
Global food trade has proven to be highly resilient to a wide range of disruptions, typically adapting within a few months to extreme weather events, geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts, pandemics, financial instability and sharp fluctuations in energy prices. This is one of the key conclusions of FAO’s new report, The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets 2026 (SOCO 2026).
At the same time, FAO notes that market adjustment is often accompanied by significant food price volatility. According to the report, the weaker the market’s ability to absorb shocks, the greater the price fluctuations. The organization believes that expanding international trade can strengthen the resilience of global agricultural markets and contribute to improving global food security.
