Georgia’s Wheat Culture Set to Gain UNESCO Heritage Status
The nomination of “Georgian Wheat Culture: Traditions and Rituals” has passed a key stage in the process of being added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
A draft positive decision regarding Georgia’s submission has now been published, The Caspian Post reports citing Georgia Today.
The element, designated as a nationally significant heritage by the Government of Georgia under Resolution No. 98 on March 27, 2024, was officially submitted to UNESCO the following day. Having successfully passed the first phase of review, the nomination has now received a favorable assessment in the second stage of evaluation.
UNESCO’s conclusion reveals that the inclusion of Georgian wheat culture on the Representative List will enhance global awareness and appreciation of the deep-rooted traditions surrounding wheat in Georgia. The organization emphasized that the element promotes food security, gender equality, inclusive economic growth, ecological sustainability, peace and social cohesion.
The final decision will be made during the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, scheduled to take place in New Delhi, India, from December 8-13, 2025.
