Gasoline and diesel prices in Romania hit record highs

Fuel prices in Romania have reached record levels. Gasoline rose to 10.05 lei/liter, or about €2.02, while diesel approached 11 lei/liter, or around €2.21.

The increase is being driven mainly by high import costs. Diesel prices on the international market have remained above $1,500/t for more than a week, raising import and distribution expenses.

Romania produces up to 3 mln tons of crude oil per year, but the domestic market remains exposed to global market conditions and imported petroleum products.

Taxes account for around 60% of the retail fuel price at Romanian filling stations, adding further pressure to consumer costs. As a result, fuel prices in Romania remain higher than in several neighboring countries.

Further price movements will depend on international petroleum product markets and import costs. High diesel prices are also increasing expenses for the transport, agricultural and logistics sectors.
