Gala apple prices in Poland remain low despite strong export demand
Gala apple prices in Poland remain under pressure despite strong export demand and lower-than-usual supplies. According to FruitVeB, growers have so far been unable to achieve a significant increase in purchase prices, even amid favorable conditions in export markets. Some trading companies have slightly raised their offers, but the main price ranges in the wholesale market have remained largely unchanged.
Currently, Gala apples larger than 65 mm in diameter are sold in Poland at PLN 1.00–1.50/kg, while fruit larger than 70 mm is priced at PLN 1.40–2.00/kg, depending on the variety and quality characteristics. By comparison, during the same period last year, prices for apples larger than 65 mm stood at PLN 1.50–1.70/kg, while larger fruit fetched PLN 2.00–2.20/kg. Thus, current prices remain noticeably below last year’s levels.
A key feature of the current season is that strong demand for Polish Gala apples from international buyers has yet to translate into the expected price increases. At the same time, production volumes are lower than in previous years, which would normally create conditions for higher prices. However, limited supplies and stable export demand have so far failed to bring significant price improvements for Polish apple growers.
One of the main factors limiting price growth is rising costs for market participants, particularly logistics expenses. Higher transportation costs reduce the profitability of export operations and limit traders’ ability to increase purchase prices. Meanwhile, the outlook for Polish apple exports remains positive, as demand for Gala apples in international markets continues to be strong.
In the near term, a significant increase in Polish Gala apple prices is not expected due to high logistics and operating costs.
