France’s cereal crop conditions stabilize after April drought
France’s cereal crop conditions have stabilized after improved weather in May, when rainfall helped ease the impact of the driest April on record. According to FranceAgriMer, the overall situation for winter crops has improved following early-season weather stress.
As of May 11, 80% of soft wheat crops in France were rated good or excellent, unchanged from the previous week and above 73% a year earlier. Winter barley also remained stable at 76% in good or very good condition, compared with 68% last year. Spring barley continues to show strong performance, with 86% of crops rated positively, slightly higher than the previous week.
Corn planting has also progressed significantly, reaching 95% of planned acreage versus 86% a week earlier and 88% last year. FranceAgriMer estimates that 90% of corn crops are currently in good or excellent condition, slightly above last year’s level.
Analysts note that the stabilization reduces early-season production risks, although final yields will still depend heavily on weather conditions in June and July.
