France faces sharp decline in corn plantings as farmers raise alarm
France’s grain corn sector is experiencing a significant reduction in planting areas this spring, raising serious concerns among market participants. According to industry estimates, the decline ranges between 10% and 15% compared to last year, which could negatively affect both feed supply and the financial stability of farmers.
Data from the French corn producers’ association indicates that such a drop is a worrying signal pointing to deeper structural problems within the sector. Preliminary estimates from the Ministry of Agriculture’s statistical office show that corn planting areas this season total around 1.33 million hectares, compared to more than 1.5 million hectares in each of the previous two years.
Experts warn that the reduction in acreage directly impacts the country’s production potential. Despite generally favorable agri-climatic conditions — including adequate water availability and suitable weather — many farmers are choosing to abandon corn due to economic pressures.
The main driver behind this shift is the declining profitability of corn in recent years. As a result, many farms are switching to more profitable crops, particularly wheat. Estimates suggest that wheat planting areas have increased by approximately 300,000 hectares compared to last season.
Industry representatives are calling for urgent government intervention, warning of a potential deep crisis across the entire production and supply chain. Without substantial support, France’s corn sector could face long-term challenges, and farmers have not ruled out protests if effective measures are not introduced.
