FAO distributes over 87 thsd wheat cultivation packages to Afghan farmers
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has distributed more than 87,000 wheat cultivation packages to farming families across Afghanistan. According to the agency, a total of 87,400 packages were delivered to support farmers in different regions of the country.
Each package includes certified wheat seeds combined with quality fertilizers. FAO noted that certified seeds, when used together with proper fertilizers, have demonstrated higher yields compared to traditional varieties, enabling families to produce more food, support local communities and generate income.
The assistance comes amid a worsening food security situation in Afghanistan. A recent FAO report projects that around 17.4 million people will face high levels of acute hunger during the harsh winter lean season.
Agriculture remains the main livelihood for about 80 percent of Afghanistan’s population of more than 36 million. However, farmers continue to face major challenges, including limited access to modern equipment, reliance on traditional farming practices, poor road infrastructure for timely market access, lack of cold storage facilities and shortages of improved seeds.
