Exports of Ukrainian soybean and rapeseed to the EU have fallen sharply
The European Union imported 1.71 mln tons of soybeans from the start of the MY 2026/27 through August 23, down 25% from the same period last season. Supplies of Ukrainian soybeans fell much more sharply to 81.6 thsd tons from 277.1 thsd tons a year earlier, a decline of about 71%.
Brazil remains the EU’s largest soybean supplier, shipping 1.48 mln tons compared with 1.43 mln tons a year earlier. Meanwhile, imports from the United States dropped to 117 thsd tons from 491.8 thsd tons. As a result, the EU’s reliance on Brazilian soybeans has increased significantly at the start of the season amid an overall decline in imports.
The situation is different in the rapeseed market, with total EU imports rising 3% to 530 thsd tons. However, supplies from Ukraine fell 42%, from 193.6 thsd tons to 112.2 thsd tons. As a result, Ukraine slipped to third place among suppliers, behind Australia with 177.2 thsd tons and Canada with almost 117 thsd tons.
Canada has strengthened its position particularly sharply, as it supplied virtually no rapeseed to the EU during the same period last season. Australia also increased shipments from 133.2 thsd tons to 177.2 thsd tons. Thus, lower Ukrainian supplies are currently being offset primarily by increased rapeseed purchases from other origins.
Ukrainian soybean meal supplies to the EU also fell significantly, dropping 52% to 88.9 thsd tons from 184.3 thsd tons a year earlier. Overall, the EU imported 2.35 mln tons of soybean meal, down 24% year-on-year, while palm oil imports decreased 23% to 360 thsd tons.
