Exports of rapeseed and soybean meal from India are declining
India is actively harvesting rapeseed, with the 2026 harvest expected to reach a record 11.7 million tonnes. However, the increased production will be largely offset by low inventories of the old crop, according to Oil World (Germany).
Analysts predict a slowdown in rapeseed processing in India in the 2026/27 season. After several years of rapid growth, the industry may face stagnation. Experts cite limited domestic supply and changing global oilseed market conditions as the main reasons.
Currently, rapeseed consumption within India is directly dependent on vegetable oil demand. However, the profitability of processing plants is under threat. Interest from foreign buyers is expected to decline in the coming months, as a new agreement between China and Canada could significantly reduce the share of Indian meal in the Chinese market.
In October–January 2025/26, Indian rapeseed meal exports, according to analysts, already fell by 32% (to 356,000 tonnes), as prices for local products proved uncompetitive.
The Indian soybean sector is also experiencing stagnation. Soybean meal exports fell by 30% from October to January 2025/26, reaching only 425,000 tonnes.
Indian products are trading significantly higher than their global counterparts, and demand from European importers is sharply declining. The conflict in the Middle East has triggered rising freight costs and disruptions in supply chains, experts note.
