Expensive logistics and low grain prices pose a threat to food security – Solskyi
Russia’s war against Ukraine became one of the factors provoking the world food crisis and threatening global food security. The losses of the Ukrainian agricultural sector due to the war also have an impact on the increase in food prices. This was emphasized by the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Mykola Solskyi, during his speech at the Coldiretti International Agricultural and Food Forum of the Confederation of Italian Agricultural Producers.
He thanked the partners for their support and emphasized the importance of joint efforts to prevent the possible emergence of hunger in the world.
The Minister also noted that the Ukrainian agricultural sector suffered heavy losses due to the war. The key problem for farmers remains expensive logistics and low grain prices, which now barely cover the cost price.
“Our farmers suffered and are suffering huge losses, taking into account the costs of fertilizers, fuel and sometimes millions of dollars worth of damage to their productions. This has already affected the sowing campaign of winter crops and will directly affect the indicators of the spring sowing campaign,” said Mykola Solskyi.
Despite the difficult challenges caused by the war, Ukraine is ready to continue to fulfill its obligations to export agricultural products and support poor countries. In particular, within the framework of the humanitarian initiative Grain from Ukraine.
“The crisis provoked by the war goes far beyond food insecurity and requires a comprehensive response and support from Ukraine. People’s lives are not a subject for bargaining,” the Minister summarized.
