EU’s largest dairy farm in Romania plans to double milk production by 2030

Romanian group DN AGRAR, described as the European Union’s largest milk producer, has announced a major investment programme through 2030. The company operates an integrated model combining dairy farming, crop production, organic waste composting and renewable energy development.

The group currently operates five large farms, keeps more than 18,000 head of cattle and produces over 70 million litres of milk annually. By 2030, DN AGRAR aims to raise annual milk output to 150–200 million litres and expand its total herd to around 30,000 cows.

A key part of the strategy is the construction of the CUT 2 farm in Alba County, near the existing CUT 1 complex. The project is estimated at around €12 million and will accommodate approximately 5,000 dairy cows, with planned annual milk production exceeding 50 million litres.

Construction of CUT 2 is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with commissioning expected in 2028. The farm is projected to reach full capacity by 2030 and will be equipped with two rotary milking systems as well as robotic udder-cleaning and hygiene solutions.

DN AGRAR is also investing around €3.5 million in two new composting facilities. These projects are expected to increase organic fertilizer production capacity from 14,000 to 28,000 tonnes per year, with a longer-term target of 40,000 tonnes. The company also plans to expand carbon-credit generation and launch a dedicated compost brand.

As part of its circular farming model, the group plans to cover up to 30% of the new farm’s feed needs through its own wheat-sprout production facility. In the longer term, DN AGRAR aims to develop agri-industrial clusters combining dairy farms, biomethane production, composting, vertical farms and greenhouse operations.
