EU soybean imports fall 50% at start of new season

The European Union has started the new marketing year with a sharp decline in soybean imports. According to European Commission data, EU-27 countries imported around 657 thsd tons of soybeans as of August 2, down 50% from the same period last season.

The new marketing year began on July 1, meaning the current figures cover roughly the first month of the season. Import volumes were among the lowest recorded in recent years, indicating a significant slowdown in demand from European buyers.

The EU traditionally remains one of the world’s largest soybean importers, with the commodity widely used by the processing and animal feed industries. Such a sharp decline in purchases at the beginning of the season could therefore affect not only the European market but also global soybean trade flows.

Weak European demand is putting additional pressure on global soybean spot prices. According to analysts, the market currently lacks strong bullish factors, while reduced purchases by one of the world’s major importers are limiting support for prices.

The future pace of EU imports will depend on demand from processors and the feed sector, as well as developments in global soybean prices. If the current slow pace of purchases persists, it could remain a bearish factor for global soybean prices and futures in the near term.
