EU soft wheat and rapeseed yields expected lower in 2026
The MARS crop monitoring service forecasts that the European Union’s average soft wheat yield in 2026 will reach 5.98 t/ha, down 5% compared to 2025. Average rapeseed yields are also expected to decline by 3% to 3.22 t/ha, while winter barley yields may fall 10% to 5.13 t/ha. Soft wheat is the EU’s most widely grown cereal, and rapeseed is the main oilseed crop.
Winter crops across Europe are gradually resuming vegetative growth under generally favorable conditions, supported by adequate soil moisture and mild late-winter temperatures, according to MARS.
However, excessive rainfall in parts of southwestern and eastern Europe has caused temporary waterlogging and local flooding, while severe February frosts may have inflicted local damage in Poland, Ukraine, and the Baltic states.
In addition, emerging precipitation deficits in northeastern Europe require monitoring, as crop water needs are expected to rise in the coming weeks.
Further development of the grain and oilseed markets of Ukraine and the Black Sea region will be in the spotlight of the BLACK SEA GRAIN. KYIV conference, taking place on April 22–23 in Kyiv. The event will focus on strategic directions for the agricultural sector through 2030, including investments, energy independence, processing, and exports of high-value products.
