EU nitrogen fertilizer prices remain 45% above 2024 levels despite cheaper imports
Domestic nitrogen fertilizer prices in the European Union continue to rise relative to the 2024 baseline, despite a decline in the average cost of imported products. According to the European Commission’s monitoring report dated October 5, 2026, domestic nitrogen fertilizer prices in September were 45.1% above the 2024 average. In comparison, the difference stood at 40.5% in August. Thus, the price deviation increased by 4.6 percentage points over the month.
Meanwhile, the average import unit value of nitrogen fertilizers in the EU fell to €362/t in September from €416/t in August, a decline of approximately 13%. Despite this decrease, imported products remained more expensive than the 2024 average of €298/t. Accordingly, September import unit values were 21.5% above the baseline, compared with 39.5% in August.
A similar trend was observed in the segment of mixed fertilizers containing nitrogen. Their average import unit value declined to €625/t in September from €697/t in August, representing a decrease of approximately 10.3%. However, compared with the 2024 average of €486/t, these fertilizers remained 28.6% more expensive. In August, the difference from the baseline was 43.5%.
Despite lower import costs in September, nitrogen fertilizers remain significantly more expensive than in 2024. Persistently high domestic prices could continue to put considerable pressure on European farmers’ production costs, particularly ahead of fertilizer purchases for upcoming fieldwork campaigns.
