EU increases imports of oilseeds and cuts grain exports

According to the European Commission, in MY 2024/25 (as of December 8), the EU increased imports of oilseeds and reduced exports of grains compared to the same period of the previous season.

Thus, in comparison with MY 2023/24 the imports increased:

  • rapeseed – by 3% to 2.6 mln tonnes, of which 1.8 mln tonnes were supplied from Ukraine, 474 thsd tonnes – from Australia and 113 thsd tonnes – from Canada;
  • soybeans – by 11% to 5.6 million tons, of which 2.4 million tons were supplied from Brazil, 2.3 million tons – from the United States, 570 thousand tons – from Ukraine;
  • sunseed – by 20% to 295 thsd tonnes, of which 180 thsd tonnes were supplied from Moldova, 44 thsd tonnes – from Serbia and 24 thsd tonnes – from Ukraine;
  • corn – by 11% to 8.8 mln tonnes, of which 4.7 mln tonnes were supplied from Ukraine, 1.6 mln tonnes – from Brazil and 1.3 mln tonnes – from the USA.

At the same time, the imports of sunflower oil to the EU in MY 2024/25 decreased by 14% to 897 thsd tonnes, of which 840 thsd tonnes were supplied from Ukraine.

At the same time, the exports of grains decreased compared to the same period of the previous season, in particular

  • wheat – by 29% to 10.2 mln tonnes, of which 1.7 mln tonnes were delivered to Nigeria, 999 thsd tonnes – to Morocco, 803 thsd tonnes – to the UK, 691 thsd tonnes – to Egypt and 683 thsd tonnes – to Algeria;
  • barley – by 35% to 2 mln tonnes, of which 502 thsd tonnes were delivered to Saudi Arabia, 306 thsd tonnes – to China and 262 thsd tonnes – to Algeria.
