EU has agreed on the terms of a trade agreement with Ukraine with certain restrictions
On March 27, European Union ambassadors agreed to continue trade liberalization with Ukraine. The agreement provides for new restrictions. This was reported by the Belgian presidency of the EU Council.
The text of the compromise proposal was presented by the Belgian side. It differs from the previous version, agreed a week earlier by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU, in that it was decided to use the indicators not only for 2022 and 2023, but also for the second half of 2021 to impose emergency restrictions on the import of a number of products from Ukraine. This is a compromise agreement with, among others, France and Poland, which demanded that the entire year of 2021 be included in the calculations.
As noted in the report, the compromise “provides a balanced approach between supporting Ukraine and protecting EU agricultural markets.”
The proposal must now be approved by the European Parliament at its plenary session in April.
