EU continues raising tariffs on fertilizer imports from Russia and Belarus
The European Union implemented the second stage of higher import tariffs on fertilizers from Russia and Belarus on July 1. The additional duty on nitrogen fertilizers increased from €40/t to €60/t, while tariffs on selected compound fertilizers rose from €45/t to €70/t, on top of the existing 6.5% base tariff.
The phased tariff increase is part of the EU’s long-term strategy to reduce its dependence on fertilizer imports from Russia and Belarus while supporting domestic fertilizer production.
Under the approved schedule, the additional tariffs are set to increase further to €315–430/t by 2028, depending on the fertilizer type, significantly reducing the competitiveness of Russian and Belarusian products in the EU market.
