Egypt to harvest record 10 mln tons of wheat and cut imports by 23%
Egypt’s wheat production may rise to a record 10 mln tons in the MY 2026/27, according to FAS USDA. Against this backdrop, wheat imports are forecast at 12 mln tons, down 23% year-on-year and the lowest level since the MY 2022/23.
The larger crop will be driven primarily by an expansion in harvested area. In 2026/27, wheat area is expected to increase to 1.5 mln ha from 1.33 mln ha in the previous season. At the same time, Egypt is seeking to raise yields through improved production technologies, early-maturing high-yielding varieties and wider use of certified seed.
Higher government procurement prices have provided an additional incentive for farmers. The authorities aim to increase strategic grain reserves and strengthen the country’s food security amid regional instability.
Wheat consumption in Egypt is forecast at 20.7 mln tons in the MY 2026/27, around 0.5% higher than a year earlier. Demand continues to grow due to population growth, with the country’s population exceeding 108 mln people, as well as a large number of migrants and refugees.
Egypt also plans to increase wheat flour exports. Shipments in the MY 2026/27 may rise by 17% to 1.4 mln tons. Key destinations remain markets in Africa and the Middle East, including Somalia, Yemen, Sudan and Eritrea.
