Egypt Secures Over 644,000 Tons of Local Wheat as Strategic Commodity Reserves Strengthen

In a high-level meeting held to assess Egypt’s strategic commodity reserves, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to ensuring food security and safeguarding the consistent supply of essential goods for citizens. He stressed the state’s continuous coordination with the Central Bank to secure the foreign currency required for imports, noting that the current abundance of supplies is already playing a role in stabilizing market prices.

Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Sherif Farouk, provided a comprehensive update on the nation’s commodity stockpiles, describing them as stronger than in previous years. According to Farouk, wheat reserves—factoring in current contracts—are sufficient for 3.4 months. Meanwhile, sugar reserves have reached a remarkable 14.3 months. Other critical supplies also remain solid, including 2.9 months of raw cooking oil, 6.1 months of frozen poultry, and 12 months of frozen meat.
Additionally, Egypt holds adequate stocks of everyday staples such as rice, pasta, tea, fish, flour, and live livestock from Sudan. The minister also highlighted the ongoing progress in local wheat procurement, with nearly 645,000 tonnes already received from farmers in the current season. He emphasized that the government is actively working to expand wheat silo capacity to improve storage and ensure sustainable food security for the future.
Farouk concluded by reaffirming the state’s full support for farmers, including a range of incentives and logistical assistance to help meet procurement targets and secure the success of this year’s harvest.
