Egypt purchased more than 4.3 mln tons of new-crop wheat from local farmers

Egypt continues to build up its strategic grain reserves and has already procured more than 4.3 million tons of locally produced wheat during the current marketing season. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, this represents about 86% of the government’s procurement target of 5 mln tons.

Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk said the strong pace of deliveries reflects a package of support measures introduced for farmers, including financial incentives and simplified procurement procedures. Wheat remains a strategic crop for Egypt and a key pillar of the country’s food security policy, particularly for bread production.

This season, Egypt’s wheat area reached a record 3.7 mln feddans, an increase of 600 thsd feddans compared to the previous year. Farmer participation was further encouraged by the government’s decision to raise the procurement price to EGP 2,500 per ardeb, improving profitability for local producers.

To facilitate the harvest campaign, authorities established more than 400 collection and receiving points across the country. The expanded network has reduced transportation costs for farmers and accelerated grain deliveries, while payments are being made within 48 hours of wheat receipt.

The ministry noted that procurement operations are continuing at silos, storage facilities, and collection centers nationwide. Dedicated inspection committees are overseeing grain quality and acceptance procedures, while a central operations room and regional monitoring units are working to address farmers’ concerns and ensure the smooth progress of the procurement campaign.
