Egypt purchased 730 thsd tons of wheat from local farmers
Egypt has purchased around 729 thsd tons of locally grown wheat since the start of its domestic procurement season two weeks ago, according to official data released at the end of April.
The cumulative intake is 13% higher than in the same period of 2025, when about 644,814 tons were collected. However, it remains 26.9% below 2024 levels, when nearly 998,796 tons had been procured by the same date.
The government buys wheat from local farmers at premium prices to reduce import dependence while ensuring stable supplies for its subsidized bread program. More than 69 million people in Egypt benefit from subsidized bread under this system.
Egypt aims to procure around 5 million tons of local wheat in 2026. The procurement season runs from April 15 to August 15.
