Egypt plans to produce up to 2 mln tons of green ammonia per year

Egypt plans to develop production capacity of up to 2 mln tons of green ammonia per year under the Ra Green Ammonia project in East Port Said. Production is expected to start in the second half of 2028.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $3.55 mln reimbursable grant for the project. The funding is being provided under the Africa Green Hydrogen Program, which supports the development of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

The Ra Green Ammonia project covers an area of around 780 sq km. It is being developed primarily by Germany’s DAI Infrastruktur in partnership with Freepan Holdings.

The grant is part of a broader $20 mln AfDB funding package for four green hydrogen and derivatives projects in Egypt, Morocco, Namibia and South Africa. The program is intended to help attract private capital and foreign investment into new infrastructure.

The Egyptian project is among the largest green ammonia initiatives currently under development in Africa in terms of announced production capacity. However, actual output will depend on project implementation and whether the planned commissioning schedule is met.
