Egypt is discussing increasing wheat imports from Poland
Egypt is discussing increasing wheat imports from Poland as part of efforts to diversify sources of strategic commodities and strengthen food security, the Ministry of Supply announced on Tuesday.
Supply Minister Sherif Farouk met in Cairo with Polish Secretary of State Małgorzata Gromadzka to discuss cooperation in grain, meat, and other food products, the ministry said in a statement.
The talks also discussed cooperation in developing the Egyptian grain elevator industry, localizing production, and transferring Polish technology to increase storage capacity, reduce waste, and improve grain processing.
Egypt, one of the world’s largest wheat importers, has been seeking to diversify supply sources and strengthen strategic reserves in recent years.
According to a recent official statement from Poland, Polish agricultural exports to Egypt in 2025 will amount to €104 million ($118 million), an 18% increase from 2024. These mainly include fresh eggs, pears and quinces, cheeses and cottage cheese, as well as animal intestines, bladders, and stomachs.
According to shipping data, in 2025, Egypt imported wheat primarily from Russia and Ukraine, which together accounted for 85% of total wheat imports.
