Egypt increases domestic wheat procurement by 17% to 5 mln tons
Egypt increased state purchases of locally grown wheat by 17% year on year to 5 mln tons last season. This was reported by Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk. The increase in deliveries was driven by higher government procurement prices aimed at supporting domestic farmers.
According to the minister, the government set the procurement price for Egyptian wheat above the cost of imported grain. The measure was designed to encourage farmers to deliver larger volumes of their harvest to state reserves by offering more favorable selling conditions.
Egyptian authorities intend to continue supporting domestic wheat production. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has announced a new incentive procurement price for wheat in the current season. The government expects higher prices to encourage farmers to increase the volumes of locally produced wheat sold to the state.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has used strategic grain reserves to meet the needs of bakeries. According to Farouk, government stocks were released when some producers faced difficulties securing raw material supplies. This helped maintain the availability of essential food products on the domestic market.
The increase in domestic wheat procurement is part of Egypt’s efforts to strengthen local grain supplies and support the agricultural sector. The government is combining higher procurement prices for farmers with the use of strategic reserves to ensure stable raw material supplies to the bakery industry.
