Egypt has yet to set timeline for grain hub promoted by Russia

Egypt has yet to set a timeline for creating a grain hub near the Suez Canal, a project being discussed with Russia. Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Mohamed Farid Saleh said no specific implementation schedule has been determined. According to him, disruptions to maritime transport are increasing the importance of developing grain storage and logistics capacity in Egypt.

The initiative to establish grain and energy hubs in Egypt was publicly proposed by Vladimir Putin in April 2026. Egypt’s location and the Suez Canal could allow the country to serve as a storage and distribution point for grain destined for markets in Africa and the Middle East.

In May, Egypt and Russia discussed creating a regional logistics center for grain trade and storage at Egyptian ports, as well as long-term contracts for Russian wheat supplies. Egypt is also considering expanding the future hub beyond storage and re-exports to include grain processing and the production of flour, pasta, vegetable oils and feed.

However, Egypt’s concept is broader than servicing Russian supplies alone. Cairo has said it aims to establish a global grain storage, processing and trading center that would strengthen the country’s role as a trade hub linking the Middle East, Africa and other markets. The grain hub was again discussed during Russian-Egyptian contacts at the BRICS summit in September.

The project has gained additional relevance amid disruptions to Black Sea logistics. Saleh said a grain hub near the Suez Canal could support Egypt’s trade with Russia and other markets, although the timeline for its development remains uncertain.
