Egypt buys five wheat cargoes amid disruptions to Black Sea exports
Egypt’s state grain buyer, Future of Egypt, purchased about five cargoes of wheat this week, resuming imports after several months of limited activity. The purchases were reportedly made through private negotiations with suppliers rather than an international tender. The state buyer’s return to the market comes amid disruptions to grain shipments from the Black Sea region.
The origins of the purchased wheat have not yet been confirmed. However, the grain is expected to be sourced from European countries, particularly France and Romania. Market participants note that Egypt’s state grain buyer has recently stepped up requests for price indications and commercial offers. This may indicate a gradual recovery in import activity after a prolonged period of limited purchases.
In the first half of 2026, Ukraine and Russia accounted for more than 82% of Egypt’s total wheat imports. However, intensified attacks on Black Sea ports, export terminals and commercial vessels have led to delays and cancellations of some shipments. Due to disruptions in maritime logistics, importers are increasingly considering alternative sources of supply.
Egypt had previously limited state wheat purchases on the international market thanks to substantial domestic stocks. In 2026, the country purchased a record volume of wheat from local producers, while authorities reported that strategic reserves were sufficient to cover domestic consumption for several months. This allowed the state buyer to remain largely inactive in the import market for an extended period, despite growing difficulties with shipments from traditional suppliers.
Egypt’s renewed purchases could strengthen demand for European wheat, particularly from France and Romania. However, the future origins of its imports will depend on grain availability, export prices and maritime shipping conditions. The total tonnage of the purchased cargoes, their value and delivery dates have not yet been disclosed. Further activity by the state buyer will indicate whether changes in Egypt’s wheat import structure are likely to persist.
