Egypt and Indonesia set to lead global wheat imports
Egypt and Indonesia are set to compete for the position of the world’s largest wheat importer in the 2025/2026 marketing year. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), both countries are expected to import around 13 million tonnes of wheat by the end of the season in June.
This level of demand places the two nations at the top of the global market and highlights their growing influence in international grain trade. Together, they could account for nearly 12% of global wheat imports.
Egypt’s demand remains structurally high, driven by rapid population growth and a large subsidized bread program. The country is the largest wheat consumer in Africa and one of the leading importers worldwide.
Meanwhile, Indonesia continues to increase its reliance on wheat imports amid the expansion of its food industry and rising consumption of flour-based products. This makes the country a key player in the global grain market.
Analysts note that competition between the two countries for supply could impact global prices and trade flows. Strong demand from Egypt and Indonesia is expected to remain a key factor shaping the global wheat market.
