Indonesia has recorded a significant increase in chicken egg prices, driven by limited corn supplies and rising feed costs.

According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the average egg price nationwide reached US$1.92 per kilogram in the third week of September, up 0.21% from the previous month.

BPS Director Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti explained that the key factor behind the price increase was a decrease in corn production. Dry corn production (14% moisture) fell by 21.09% in August, 24.73% in September, and is forecast to decline by 15.67% in October. Overall, this represents a potential annual decline of 20.87%, or approximately 0.96 million tons, compared to last year.

Reduced supply has led to rising corn prices, which has directly impacted the cost of feed and, consequently, eggs.

“One of the main reasons for the rise in corn and feed prices is the reduction in production over the past three months,” noted Widyasanti.

According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade, as of September 20, egg price increases were recorded in 32.78% of the country’s regions.
The highest prices are observed in Papua Province—$6.25/kg in Central Mamberamo, $5.94/kg in Puncak Jaya, and $5.00/kg in Intan Jaya.
