Drought in Ukraine covers about 70% of winter crops
This year’s drought in Ukraine has covered about 70% of the area to be sown with winter crops.
This was stated by Tetyana Adamenko, Head of the Agrometeorology Department of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, during an overview of the Ukrainian economy prepared by the Center for Economic Strategy (CES).
She emphasized that one of the largest summer and autumn droughts on record is currently underway.
“According to the definitions of moisture reserves made by the Hydrometeorological Center, 70 percent or more of the areas to be sown with winter crops are currently covered by drought,” Adamenko said.
She added that so far, only in 2011 and 2015 have such large-scale summer and fall droughts been observed. This is when the upper layers of the soil are completely dry, and the moisture content of the meter-long layer drops to zero, i.e. the meter-long layer of soil is completely dry.
According to Tetyana Adamenko, the deadline for sowing winter crops has not yet been missed.
“We can sow until the end of September under the conditions that have been prevailing in recent years, even in early October. In the southern regions, it is the end of October and the beginning of November. I remember certain areas were sown in early December. So everything can still work out with the next year’s harvest,” the agrometeorologist assured.
