Diesel prices in Europe rise 40% since the start of the year

Diesel prices in Europe have risen by around 40% since the start of 2026, while gasoline prices are up 28%. According to Transport & Environment, based on European Commission data, the higher fuel costs are adding around €203 mln per day to consumer expenses.

Filling a 50-liter diesel tank now costs about €30 more than at the beginning of the year. The main drivers are shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz and reduced supplies from Russian refineries.

Europe is particularly exposed to higher diesel prices, as diesel accounts for more than 40% of total oil product consumption in the EU. In addition, around four in ten cars on European roads still run on diesel.

Against the backdrop of high prices, European policymakers are discussing temporary easing of some fuel standards to increase refinery output. Wider use of B10 fuel containing 10% biodiesel instead of standard B7 is also being considered.

High diesel prices are increasing costs for the transport, agricultural and logistics sectors, where fuel remains a major component of operating expenses. Further price movements will depend mainly on the global crude oil market and the stability of supply routes.
