Demand for Ukrainian wheat remains strong despite export halt at Greater Odesa ports

International demand for Ukrainian wheat remains resilient despite the effective suspension of grain exports through the Greater Odesa ports following intensified Russian attacks. Part of the export flow is being redirected through Ukraine’s Danube ports with onward shipments via Romania’s Port of Constanța.

However, the Danube route faces significant limitations. Water levels are around 1.5 meters below normal, allowing only shallow-draft vessels to operate and restricting export capacity.

Despite these logistical challenges, export business continues. According to traders, a deal was confirmed on July 26 for 11.5% protein wheat shipped from Izmail at $262/ton CIF Alexandria, highlighting continued demand for Ukrainian wheat on international markets.

Market participants note that the Danube corridor remains an important alternative export route, but limited capacity, low water levels and higher logistics costs prevent it from fully replacing the deep-water ports of Greater Odesa.

Restoring stable operations at Ukraine’s Black Sea deep-water ports remains essential for returning grain exports to normal volumes.
