Conditions for successful overwintering of winter crops in Ukraine currently fully satisfactory
Agrometeorological conditions for the successful overwintering of winter crops in Ukraine are currently fully satisfactory. This is due to the good condition of the crops before winter and the development of sufficient cold tolerance in the plants.
According to the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, most fields are covered with snow ranging from 5 to 15 cm, while in the western and northern regions snow depth reaches 16–38 cm. Such snow cover reliably protects the root system of winter crops.
At present, there are no risks for winter wheat and rye. However, for winter rapeseed and barley, which are less frost-resistant, there is a risk of plant damage in southern regions and in many areas of Poltava, Kirovohrad, and Sumy regions where snow is absent or less than 5 cm, and air temperatures have dropped to –12 to –17°C for several days, especially for plants that were overgrown in autumn.
