Condition of spring crops in the US has improved
Last week, the condition of spring wheat, soybeans, and corn crops in the US improved slightly.
According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) as of July 12, the share of spring wheat crops in excellent and good condition increased to 58% (57% the week before and 50% a year ago), soybeans to 65% (64% and 62%), and corn to 68% (67% and 65%).
Two-thirds of the winter wheat crop has already been harvested. According to the US Department of Agriculture, the gross harvest of winter and spring wheat this year will fall to 41.81 million tons, the lowest level since 1970. Last year, the US harvested 54.01 million tons. The decline in production is caused by both a reduction in sown area from 15.07 million hectares to 12.98 million hectares, and a decrease in average yield from 35.8 c/ha to 32.2 c/ha.
