CHS to invest $700 mln in new US soybean processing plant

US agricultural cooperative CHS plans to build a new soybean processing facility near Evansville, Wisconsin. The investment is estimated at around $700 mln, with the plant scheduled to begin operations in fall 2028.

The new facility will have capacity to process around 80 mln bushels of soybeans annually. Once operational, it is expected to produce about 1 bln pounds of soybean oil and 2 mln tons of soybean meal per year.

CHS said the investment is driven by strong demand for soybean products from the food, feed and renewable fuel sectors, as well as efforts to expand domestic processing capacity in the US. The plant’s location near soybean-producing areas, rail service and major transportation corridors is expected to facilitate both raw material supply and product shipments.

The project will also create a new market outlet for Wisconsin farmers. Once operational, the facility is expected to employ around 80 people permanently, while hundreds of workers and contractors will be involved during construction.

CHS already processes soybeans and rapeseed at several facilities in Minnesota. Once the Evansville plant comes online, the cooperative’s total soybean processing capacity will increase by more than two-thirds.
