China sees potential for increased US soybean imports

China’s demand for imported agricultural products is expected to continue growing as living standards rise, creating opportunities for increased US soybean shipments. Chinese representatives made the comments during the annual Soy Connext conference in Chicago, organized by the US Soybean Export Council (USSEC).

Chinese Consul General in Chicago Wang Baodong said the country remains the world’s largest market for agricultural products. Under China’s 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026–2030, the country will continue opening its domestic market, while rising household incomes are expected to support demand for agricultural products from other countries, including US soybeans.

At the same time, soybean trade between the two countries has been significantly affected by tariff tensions. The Chinese side noted that US agricultural exports and soybean shipments to China reached record levels in 2022, but subsequent trade restrictions disrupted bilateral trade and negatively affected US farmers.

Representatives of China’s agricultural industry expressed interest in restoring and expanding cooperation with the United States. The China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Foodstuffs (CFNA) has already hosted delegations from the US soybean industry this year and expects contacts between companies from the two countries to deepen further.

Conference participants highlighted the strong complementarity between the US and Chinese agricultural markets. Rising US soybean yields, driven by advances in technology and precision agriculture over recent decades, have coincided with rapid growth in Chinese demand for meat and animal feed. The expansion of China’s livestock sector remains one of the key drivers of the country’s strong demand for imported soybeans.
