China responds to US claims on soybean purchase commitments
China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) has commented on recent White House claims that Beijing has agreed to purchase around 12 million tons of US soybeans in November–December, as well as at least 25 million tons annually over the next three years. At a press briefing on Thursday, ministry spokesperson He Yadong noted that MOFCOM had already released official information regarding the China-US economic and trade consultations held in Kuala Lumpur.
According to He, the outcomes of the consultations included progress and consensus reached in several areas, including agricultural trade. However, the Chinese side did not confirm any specific purchase volumes or long-term commitments, instead referring to the general results outlined after the talks.
He emphasized that China remains an important participant in global agricultural trade. He said the country will continue to uphold openness and cooperation, deepening mutually beneficial partnerships with global trading partners.
The spokesperson also stressed that China aims to work with other nations to maintain an open, stable, and sustainable global trading system — principles that remain central to Beijing’s economic dialogue with its international partners, including the United States.
