China Not a Big Buyer of US Wheat

While the tariff conversation has been complex US Wheat Associates Senior Vice President of Communications, Steve Mercer, says most wheat markets remain steady, with China being a primary exception where impacts have been felt.

“China is a swing market. It comes in when it sees an opportunity- can buy a lot of US wheat. It’s purchased a lot of hard red winter wheat in the past, but they have not really purchased anything going back to August of last year, because they’ve been able to find supplies from other sources that they feel, I think, are cheaper. But in general, their imports of wheat are way down this year. Think there’s kind of an effort there internally to sort of hunker down and avoid, try to avoid the impact of the trade war. So, really, haven’t seen much impact. And I think the, you know, a lot of the questions were, what’s going to happen? Well, we don’t know, right? I mean, we’re encouraged by the fact that negotiations have been stimulated because of the tariffs. So I think that’s that’s really our message is we will work together with you to try to work through those things if they come up and create disruption.”
