China maintains record soybean import pace
China imported a record 13.55 mln tons of soybeans in June 2026, marking the highest June volume ever recorded. According to customs data, imports were up 10.5% from June 2025 and nearly 15% higher than in May. The increase was driven by Brazil’s record soybean harvest and the clearance of shipments that had previously been delayed at Chinese ports.
As the world’s largest soybean importer, China plays a pivotal role in the global oilseed market. Analysts expect soybean imports to remain above 10 mln tons per month in July and August, with total 2026 imports likely to approach or even surpass last year’s record. Strong demand continues to be supported by the livestock sector, where soybean meal remains a key feed ingredient.
Despite Brazil’s dominant position in the global soybean market, the United States is also expected to expand shipments to China. During the first five months of 2026, China imported about 8.38 mln tons of U.S. soybeans after purchases resumed in late 2025. Additional momentum came from agreements reached during the May meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Under the agreement, China plans to purchase 25 mln tons of U.S. soybeans annually through 2028. Fulfilling this commitment could support U.S. exports, strengthen soybean prices, and influence future USDA supply and demand balances. At the same time, traders continue to monitor weather conditions in Brazil and the United States, as any disruptions to production or logistics could quickly reshape global trade flows.
Analysts note that China’s record soybean imports confirm the resilience of global demand despite ongoing economic uncertainty. If strong buying continues and trade commitments are fulfilled, the global soybean market and prices could receive additional support during the 2026/27 marketing year.
