China expands traceability requirements for many agricultural products
China recently published a list of 2,589 agricultural products in 20 commodity groups whose imports now require approval letters from relevant authorities and commercial registration.
The main commodity groups include seafood, fresh fruits and vegetables, spices, medicinal herbs, coffee, nuts, seedlings, grains, tobacco leaves, animal feed, and animal products. This list is based on the results of quarantine risk assessments for imported agricultural products and is consistent with international practice. It includes clearly defined search methods to facilitate the declaration process for companies. Importing companies are responsible for fully and accurately indicating the Chinese registration number of the foreign manufacturer on the customs declaration. If a consignment contains multiple items, a registration number must be provided separately for each product and each associated company.
According to Regulation No. 280, issued by the General Administration of Customs of China in October 2025, agricultural products and foodstuffs imported into this market will be required to meet stricter registration standards starting in mid-2026.
