China expands pyroxasulfone production, increasing pressure on herbicide prices

China’s Anhui Jiuyi has launched pyroxasulfone production capacity of 600 tons per year, increasing competition in the global herbicide market. The segment had previously been largely dominated by Japan’s Kumiai Chemical, which held key patents covering synthesis technologies.

Following the expiry of major patents, Chinese producers have been able to develop a full production cycle for the active ingredient. This could put downward pressure on pyroxasulfone procurement prices and reduce the cost of finished herbicide products for farmers.

The global pyroxasulfone market is estimated at around $400–500 mln annually. Application rates are relatively low at 60–210 g of active ingredient per hectare, meaning 600 tons could be sufficient to treat around 3–10 mln ha.

Pyroxasulfone is mainly used in combination herbicides targeting resistant weeds in corn, soybean and wheat crops. It is often included in resistance-management programs alongside other active ingredients.

In August–September 2026, Anhui Jiuyi launched its first commercial pyroxasulfone-based product, LanNongLe, on the Chinese market. Further expansion of Chinese production capacity could intensify price competition in the global herbicide market.
