China continues to actively purchase U.S. soybeans ahead of Xi Jinping’s visit to the US
China has made another major purchase of U.S. soybeans, buying at least 10 cargoes, according to Asian traders. State-owned Sinograin reportedly purchased 10-15 cargoes, most of them for shipment in October-November 2026.
The purchases follow recent trade talks between Washington and Beijing. According to the White House, China committed to buying 25 mln tons of U.S. soybeans annually while also increasing imports of U.S. sorghum, barley, and other agricultural commodities.
According to U.S. industry sources, China has already booked about 6 mln tons of soybeans for delivery in the U.S. marketing year beginning on September 1. The U.S. Soybean Export Council believes the latest purchases indicate that Beijing intends to meet its import commitments.
The recent decline in U.S. soybean prices has also encouraged Chinese buying. Improved weather conditions in the United States have boosted crop prospects, making U.S. soybeans more competitive on the global market.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) also confirmed a separate sale of 122 thsd tons of U.S. soybeans to China for delivery in the new marketing year. Under U.S. regulations, export sales exceeding 100 thsd tons must be reported within 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Sinograin, which manages China’s strategic grain reserves, has been auctioning imported soybeans to free up storage space for incoming U.S. shipments. Traders said about 67% of the 501 thsd tons of imported soybeans offered at the latest auction were sold.
The latest purchases are expected to be an important signal of improving trade relations between the United States and China ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to the United States next month.
